Remember: Bulbs must go in the ground before the ground freezes and while bulbs are still firm and without prominent sprouts.
Forced Bulbs
Indoor Forcing is a process that stimulates bulbs to bloom out of season. Of all the flower bulbs available in autumn, Hyacinths, Paperwhites, Narcissus (Daffodils), Tulips, Crocus and Amaryllis are the easiest to bring into flower and perfect for indoor growing. Many other bulb varieties may also be suitable for your indoor garden.
Bulbs for Naturalizing
The following bulbs are the easiest to “plant” so they look like you didn’t: Alliums, Crocus, Tulips, Iris reticulata, Scillas, Muscari Armeniacum, Daffodils and Camassia.
Selecting Bulbs For Fall Planting Beds
Determine the location, the amounf of sunlight and the size of planting bed wanted. Then look at height and color. Here are some questions that can be asked for planning out a beautiful looking garden:
- Does your customer want flowers for cutting or fragrance?
- Perhaps you need deer resistant flowers?
Preparing the Soil
To prepare the bed you will want to add organic material such as peat moss, cow manure, or compost adn a good bulb fertilizer to the soil. Mulching the bed after planting will help keep the soil temperature stable over the winter. Remember to fertilize and mulch established beds too.
When installing the bulbs we have some other items you should use:
- Espoma Bulb Tone or Bone Meal
- Bulb Planters
- Augers for planting bulbs
- With all of the moles and voles around apply Shotgun Repels-All Animal Repellent to the bulbs. It’s natural protection will keep these critters from eating the bulbs.
